How do you convince a kid who is DETERMINED to fail, that he/she can and should be successful? Teaching in a school environment where success is highlighted and treated as the norm can be great - other than the fact that it stretches the truth a bit. I have several kids every year who seem to put effort into failure, and I feel that it is is my job as a professional to convince them otherwise.
I've heard "they just don't want to learn!" one too many times.
